Coalition Commends Senators for Passing National Health IT Week Resolution

For the second consecutive year, resolution recognizes value of health IT in transforming and improving the nation’s healthcare system

Washington, D.C. – On September 17th, the Senate passed a resolution recognizing the week of September 15, 2014 as National Health IT Week, sponsored by Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and John Thune (R-SD) and the full resolution was recently made available on Thomas.gov. The Health IT Now Coalition applauds the passage of this resolution, which expresses the opinion of the U.S. Senate that health information technology has value in transforming and improving the healthcare system for all people in the United States.

James Turner, Vice President and Senior Policy Counsel for Health IT Now is thrilled by passage of the resolution and offered the following statement:

“Senator Stabenow and Senator Thune are leaders in the effort to transform healthcare by leveraging Health IT to expand access to care and engage patients in their own physical and mental health. They recognize that to transform the health system and to deliver coordinated care requires a robust health IT architecture of systems and devices that enable the exchange and use of information across all care providers. Health IT offers an opportunity to enable unprecedented coordination between doctors, nurses, social workers, mental health providers, rural and community clinics, and medical centers as well as with the patients, caregivers, and families.”

The Health IT Now Coalition looks forward to continuing to work with Congress to address areas where policy can support health IT and achieve the goals of improved health outcomes, increased access to care and decreased cost.
